"Metaphor lives a secret life all around us. We utter about one metaphor for every 10 to 25 words, or about six metaphors a minute." James Geary, I is an Other
Humans often make sense of vague, abstract or complex concepts through a metaphor. Linguist George Lakoff provides convincing evidence that metaphors may actually be people's primary mode of mental operation. The important point here is that the metaphor a person chooses to frame a concept or experience focuses attention on some aspects while ignoring others - much like a worldview. This session will explore how coaches and facilitators can intentionally draw on metaphors to enhance consciousness, craftsmanship, flexibility, interdependence and efficacy. A variety of strategies will be shared to safely surface metaphors for closer examination and possible modification.
